Explore Sarehole Mill, one of only two surviving working watermills in Birmingham, and the idyllic childhood haunt of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Sarehole Mill is a unique setting where you can find out about the millers who once worked at this rural retreat.

There has been a mill on this site since 1542, but the current building dates from the mid-18th Century. In the 1850s a steam engine was installed and a chimney built, which provides Sarehole Mill with its distinctive silhouette.

The mill has connections with Matthew Boulton, who leased Sarehole Mill between 1756 and 1761 and used it as a ‘flatting mill’, producing sheet metal used for button manufacturing.

The mill, alongside nearby Moseley Bog, provided inspiration for Tolkien’s classic works The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Visit the Tolkien exhibition inside the Mill, then take your time relaxing in the beautiful gardens surrounding the millpond.

The tranquil mill pond is a haven for wildlife including herons, mallards and moorhens - and if you are lucky you might spot our resident kingfisher!

We now have a pond-dipping platform and visitors can hire nets and see what minibeasts they can catch (subject to availability).

Most Wednesdays and Sundays our volunteer millers demonstrate the mill in action, you can even pick up a bag of Sarehole Flour from the gift shop!
