100+ YOUNG PEOPLE FROM THE MIDLANDS DESCEND ON THE NEW ALEXANDRA THEATRE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE THEATRE’S ANNUAL STAGE EXPERIENCE PRODUCTION PERFORMANCES AT BIRMINGHAM’S NEW ALEXANDRA THEATRE FROM WEDNESDAY 23RD to SATURDAY 26TH AUGUST
The New Alexandra Theatre is once again throwing its doors open this summer to welcome in the finest emerging talent the Midlands’ has to offer. This year, the theatre will mount a full scale production of the much loved musical West Side Story in under two weeks with a cast of over 100 supported by a professional creative team and a small army of backstage crew!
The New Alexandra Theatre’s Stage Experience is open to anyone aged nine to 24 who is interested in the performing arts or a career behind the scenes. Having being put through their paces at a two-stage intensive audition process, local hopefuls have now been cast in the musical which boasts iconic songs including: Maria, America, Somewhere, I Feel Pretty and Tonight performed by a live orchestra of 19 musicians.
Amongst the cast are Melissa Huband, 23, who lives in Dudley and plays Consuela. Melissa, who has starred in previous Stage Experience productions, said: “ I’m hugely excited to be taking on the role of Consuela in West Side Story. It’s an iconic role and I feel deeply privileged to be able to bring the character to life on the stage. I just can’t wait to get started.
Kathryn Irwin is 19 and lives in Stourbridge. She plays the role of Rosalia. She said: This is my first Stage Experience and I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of it. Go Sharks!”
Stage Experience Producer Becky Charles, said: “Participants can expect to be part of a busy rehearsal schedule with a full scale professional production team and orchestra. We perform to large audiences and strong reviews each year. Many of our performers make great friends over the project and return each year.”
Embarking on a career in show business is no easy feat, but the Stage Experience programme has proven to be an invaluable tool in kick starting the careers of young actors and actresses across the UK.
Top comedian Joe Lycett was a regular in Stage Experience, starring in many productions over the years including Boogie Nights and Copacabana.
Coventry’s Liam Doyle also took to the New Alexandra Theatre stage in Stage Experience before landing roles in the UK Tours of High School Musical and Wicked as well as appearing in Mamma Mia in London’s West End.
