Birmingham Contemporary Music Group have invited star conductor Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla to join them for a special concert at Birmingham Town Hall on Sunday 28th January. The CBSO’s Music Director will conduct BCMG for the first time as they celebrate musical works by the American composer Elliott Carter.
Earlier on the 28th January, children and young people are invited to CBSO Centre for fun creative music-making workshops. The young performers will then share their compositions to the audience on the Town Hall stage ahead of the main concert. Children aged 8-11 years can join the Music Maze, and older children aged 12-18 years can join the Zigzag Ensemble. BCMG musicians will be on hand to help participants explore Carter’s music and create their own compositions and improvisations in response.
Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla followed in the footsteps of Sir Simon Rattle, Sakari Oramo and Andris Nelsons when she was named Music Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in February 2016. Her performances have electrified audiences all over the world: in addition to her performance with BCMG, Mirga’s 2017-18 season includes performances in Paris, Berlin, Rome, Philadelphia and New York.
In Celebrating Carter BCMG perform works to celebrate the life and work of Elliott Carter. Carter, who died in 2012, enjoyed a long and creative relationship to BCMG and this concert includes some familiar favourites plus several pieces that are new to BCMG. Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, one of the world’s leading interpreters of Carter’s music, joins BCMG for this special concert.
Celebrating Carter is presented in partnership with THSH, as part of the Birmingham Classical 2017-18 programme.
Stephan Meier, Artistic Director of BCMG, commented: “We are very excited to be welcoming Mirga to our January concert. Her performances with CBSO are always explosive, and we are expecting musical fireworks with this special celebration of Elliott Carter. I hope plenty of young musicians join our daytime workshops for the opportunity to explore and create their own new music and take the fantastic opportunity to perform on the Town Hall stage – an experience that will be remembered for a lifetime.”
