The event, on Saturday 26 May, is organised by The Big Walk. An idea from the Eden Project made possible by the National Lottery, The Big Walk is designed to celebrate the people at the heart of the UK’s communities, who work together to make a positive difference locally.
Four teams of walkers set of from Morecambe – the geographical centre of the UK – live on the BBC One Show on Wednesday 16 May. They are travelling hundred of miles, to their respective homes in Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England and shining a light on the work done by extraordinary people
Team England will be at the Botanical Gardens and is inviting local people and community organisations to walk with them through rainforests, deserts and around the stunning gardens before sitting down to a Big Lunch on the main lawn, by bringing along a picnic.
The fun starts at 11am at the Bandstand on the main lawn. The walkers will arrive at 1130am and the Big Community Walk will begin, working up an appetite for The Big Lunch at 1pm. Across the 15 acres, anyone taking part is invited to meet local groups and projects, discover ideas to improve your community, and share what you love about where you live.
Peter Stewart of The Big Lunch says: “The Big Walk celebrates the great things people make happen where they live. Our community walk at the Botanical Gardens is a chance for people everywhere to take part and build those friendships and connections locally, which help to create stronger, happier communities. Put on your favourite walking shoes, pack some food and cheer on the walkers and the great people who are making a difference every day.”
James Wheeler, CEO and curator of Birmingham Botanical Gardens said: “We are thrilled to be working alongside The Big Walk this year - bringing local people together and making connections for the future. We already work with some fantastic local groups, but are excited by this opportunity to create more friendships and links with local businesses and community organisations. Come and explore our unique glass houses, as well as our stunning Gardens, and feel free to bring your own picnic with you to enjoy amid our cornucopia of flora fauna that spans across 185 years. In addition to this, make sure you bring along a printed copy of your email confirmation once you have signed up, as this will get you free entry to our Gardens.''
