Award-winning Rutherford Dance Company Youth (RDC Youth) present their annual show, No Borders, at Midlands Arts Centre on Thursday 12 July. The eclectic triple bill, No Borders, explores issues with social and political resonance and features a gifted and talented company of 16 dancers performing three new bespoke and innovative works.
Adam Rutherford, Artistic Director of RDC Youth, presents Wall. A topical thought-provoking work looking at the similarities between past and present regimes that segregate and oppress communities and cultures.
Lea Anderson MBE has created Formulator, an explosive piece fused together using structures borrowed from K-pop dance sequences. Co-founder of The Cholmondelays and The Featherstonehaughs dance companies, Lea Anderson has choreographed over 100 works.
Italian choreographer Chiara Prina presents a technically strong and classically based work entitled Abnormal. Chiara’s technically strong and classically based choreography is driven by her passion for the feelings experienced by the human psyche that occur in everyday life and has won her many accolades both nationally and internationally.
Adam Rutherford, Artistic Director RDC Youth said: “We are extremely grateful to be the first Birmingham based youth training programme to welcome Lea Anderson MBE and Chiara Prina to the West Midlands as part of our Arts Council England innovative youth led initiative #EMPOWER. I am incredibly proud of all the dancers in our annual show, No Borders, their commitment over the last twelve months has been second to none and you can expect to see the future of contemporary and ballet dancers for yourself when they perform.”
The annual showcase will feature a curtain raiser by Shenley Academy. RDC Youth runs weekly access contemporary technique classes and workshops at Shenley Academy supporting Shenley pupils with their BTEC Dance. No Borders will also include a special guest appearance by Hereford based 2Faced Dance’s Youth Company.
Following the chance to observe RDC Youth’s work on 12 July, young dancers are invited to sign up to participate themselves in RDC Youth’s Summer Intensive 20 – 23 August 2018, a masterclass opportunity focusing on contemporary and ballet technique for gifted and talented male and female dancers aged between 11 – 21 years of age. The company’s Annual Audition to join RDC Youth will take place on 24 August 2018.
