Children and young people aged 8 to 18 are invited to join Birmingham Contemporary Music Group as they launch a new season of creative music workshops at CBSO Centre.
Youngsters aged 8-11 can join in with Music Maze, a series of fun, creative workshops led by Nancy Evans, BCMG’s Director of Learning, and BCMG musicians. Nancy explains: “Our monthly Music Maze workshops are for inquisitive children who are excited about creating their own music. Everyone is welcome whether they play a musical instrument or not, as it’s all about an opportunity to get stuck in – we have lots of percussive instruments to have a go with. The music we create is shared at the end of the session in an informal performance for family and friends.”
Older young people aged 12-18 are invited to join the Zigzag Ensemble, a creative ensemble for those who can play a musical instrument. Composer and bass player Ben Markland leads these sessions alongside a BCMG musician, where participants create new music from scratch as a group, often inspired by music featured in upcoming BCMG concerts.
Both Music Maze and Zigzag Ensemble are free to attend but places must be booked in advance.
Teenagers aged 14-18 who are beginning to take composing more seriously can develop their skills in BCMG’s Creative Composing Lab. Under the expert guidance of professional composer David Horne, young people can create music with and for professional musicians. Nancy Evans explains that, “Creative Composing Lab is a brilliant opportunity for anyone studying music at GCSE, BTEC or A-Level to develop their skills, with the opportunity to hear their music performed by professional musicians at the end of the workshop.”
