MAC welcomes two new exhibitions, marking the beginning of its 2019 visual arts programme, both looking at themes of identity and belonging.
Sabiheh Awanzai Mahmoud, FreeHandFanatic,
Farwa Moledina and Anisa Fazal: Ways of Belonging
Sat 19 January-Sun 19 March
Ways of Belonging brings together four young female artists based in Birmingham. The exhibition, a partnership with Ort gallery, attempts to redefine the narrative around what it means to be ‘local’ and to belong somewhere.
The artwork on show here represents strong empowered women subverting the stereotypes of identity that they’re faced with and offering a new way of understanding what it means to belong.
The Sun Never Sets
Sat 12 January-Sun 10 March
The Sun Never Sets is a showcase of paintings depicting the artist’s childhood years spent in Bangladesh. The dreamlike paintings reflect the new landscapes and experiences that Matthew and his brother discovered while their parents worked in Dhaka as missionaries.
Painted from memories, the artist gives us glimpses of the beautiful physical surroundings, the expat life, his childhood relationship with his brother and the more complex cultural and historical themes of his parents’ world.
