Need summer holiday inspiration? Our busy programme features a range of exciting events, courses, activities and performances for the whole family to get involved with this summer, from Dinosaur Pottery for Kids, to Family Film Making sessions and breath-taking performances from Circus Raj!

For the kids:
Arts, Crafts and More
Children that enjoy crafting, art, and learning new techniques, will love our Creative Camps and workshops, designed to stimulate imaginative minds! Our All This Mayhem Creative Camp gives kids a chance to explore our current exhibition by Ben Venom and make their own artwork in response, whilst our Dinosaur Pottery Creative Camp lets little ones roll up their sleeves and learn how to sculpt their favourite animals from clay.
Those that love to design and make will enjoy our Puppets for Poppets workshop, which involves constructing puppets out of crafty materials before taking creations home! We’re also hosting an Alice in Wonderland Tea Party Bunting workshop, where children will learn a variety of techniques such as embellishment and hand stitching to create their very own personalised bunting.
For a dive into magic, myth and illustration, try our Heroes and Heroines: Norse Gods course. Kids will travel through time to find out what it takes to be a hero and become a legend - inventing their own Norse God and re-writing Norse mythology as a pop-up comic strip. If your child loves time-travel, they’ll enjoy taking a trip to the 90s in our fun Zine Making course, creating handmade magazines from scratch!
Theatre, Drama and Movement
We’re running lots of courses for little ones to burn off their extra energy over the next few months. Fusing martial arts, dance, music and history, our Introduction to Capoeira course will help children to improve their balance, co-ordination, physical fitness and strength. The Lunarama Drama and Musical Theatre Creative Camps are great ways for young theatre-lovers to develop their confidence, learn new skills and engage in fun games and activities.
For the young people:
Punk-inspired Artistry, Opera and Hip Hop
Yes, we certainly have something for everyone! For young people that want to learn a new style of dance, our Hip Hop & Street Dance one-day course covers choreography, breaking and freestyling in a fun environment. Youngsters will learn how to upcycle clothing and produce their own printed creations in our Punk Customisation and Punk Printmaking courses. Inspired by our current exhibition All This Mayhem by artist Ben Venom, the sessions will give participants a chance to produce inventive, original pieces.
If you fancy something completely unique, check out our Sci-Fi Baroque Opera Summer School with Infinite Opera. Young people will take part in a performance inspired by ancient mythology, carnival and the baroque period in an alternate sci-fi reality, which will be shown to friends and family at the end of the week-long course.
Broadcasting, Writing and Music-Making
Make a Podcast is a brilliant way for young people to learn all about broadcasting and presenting, figuring out how to record electronic music and sounds. Music-fanatics can get involved with our Digital Music Making for Young People, learning how to create their own bass-lines and beats in order to produce their own tracks. And, for the aspiring writers, our Creative Writing course provides techniques for how to start a story and develop an idea, as well as enjoy the drafting process!
For the family:
Performance, Cinema and Events
Our summer holiday fun doesn’t stop there… Family Film Making, Family Capoeira and Family Art Techniques: The Woods Inspired by David Hockney are the perfect way for families to spend quality time together whilst learning something new.
For both adults and children, performances from A Bird In The Hand Theatre come highly recommended. Special Delivery and The Bewonderment Machine arrive at MAC this August, blending beautiful puppetry with a good dollop of silliness – plus they’re completely free! Don’t miss out on the dazzling Circus Raj shows in our outdoor Arena this weekend too, followed by free circus workshops.
Also heading to MAC is Sam & Mark LIVE, an unmissable live hour of entertainment, jam-packed with sketches, jokes and games in a show full of fun and laughs for all the family. For families with younger children, Elmer the Patchwork Elephant Show heads to our Theatre this summer to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the classic children’s book series by David McKee.
If cinema is your thing, we are offering pocket-friendly screenings of family films at MAC throughout summer! For just £4.25 (yes, for the whole family), you can watch amazing titles such as Toy Story 4 and The Lion King. Our Relaxed Screenings will also be running, with quiet areas close by and colouring activities related to the films shown available.
